Many people have lived full and wonderful lives in Katanning since the town’s inception back in the late1800’s. People have come and gone. So many were born here and so many arrived here for work, play or simply a ‘tree change’. And many of those have stayed on and become valuable members of our community.

In days gone by Katanning had a large itinerant population due mainly to the employment opportunities the town provided. The railways was always a large employer of people with over 100 people in 1969. With the deregulation of the transport market and the closure of the railways by short sighted politicians, the Katanning station ceased to exist in the late 1980’s.

Other government departments also created a large number of employment opportunities. The Post Master General’s Department (now Telstra) employed many people on the lines, in the local telephone exchange and the in the local call centre which serviced all of Australia. Western Power (or State Electricity Commission [SEC] as it was known) however, is now a shadow of days past as far as employment.
