Obituary.
THE LATE MR. R.L. RICHARDSON.

Great Southern Herald
8 September 1928

On Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. the death occurred at his late residence, Clive Street, of Robert Lawson Richardson, aged 65 years, one of the pioneers of business activity in the Katanning district. Mr Richardson had been ailing for several months and, some weeks ago, underwent an operation. For a short time afterwards he rallied and was able to walk about, but the strain became too great and he was soon again confined to bed. On Wednesday morning his condition suddenly became worse and at 8 a.m. the end came suddenly but peacefully.

The late Mr. Richardson was a son of the late Mr. William Richardson of Dalveen, South Australia, where the gentleman under review was born on December 30, 1862.

Concluding his education at the local State School when fifteen years of age he became identified with store-keeping pursuits at Georgetown in the same State and started on his own account at Clarendon in 1897. After five years he disposed of his connection and came to Western Australia, turning his steps to Katanning after a few months at the Eastern Goldfields. In the year 1904 Mr. Richardson purchased an interest in the store-keeping business of F. and C. Piesse, which has since been carried on under the style of Richardson and Co., the late Honourable F. H. Piesse. C.M.G., being associated in partnership with Mr. Richardson.

Since he was included in the partnership, branches were established at Woodanilling, Kojonup, Gnowangerup, Tambellup, Nyabing and Badgebup, which partook of the general character of the parent business and aided in the development of these districts.

During his life in Katanning, Mr. Richardson took a keen interest in civic activities and occupied the position of Chairman of the Katanning Road Board and was a member of the Hospital Board. He took a deep interest in the advancement of the Baptist Church, of which he was a member. He was one of the prime movers in the purchase by local residents of the Katanning Roller Flour Mills and power plant, and when the company was floated occupied the position of Chairman of Directors.

He was married in 1885 to Eliza, daughter of the late C. E. King of Georgetown, South Australia, and was the father of eight children, seven daughters and an only son, Max, all of whom survive him.

The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, a brief service being held in the Baptist Church prior to the cortege moving to deceased’s last resting place. The esteem in which Mr. Richardson was held in the Katanning district and all over the State was evidenced by the numerous friends and visitors who came to pay their last respects to the dead, some 220 cars conveying the sympathisers to the local cemetery.

The remains were interred in the Baptist portion of the Katanning General Cemetery, in a special space allotted by the Cemetery Board, similar to the ground set aside for the grave of Katanning’s other great founder, the Right Honourable F. H. Piesse. C.M.G. The Rev. A. Muriel, Secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and the Rev. H. Reeve, of the Baptist Union, assisted the Rev. F. Potter of the local Baptist Church, with the service at the graveside in the presence of some 800 people; including every employee of the firm of Richardson and Company Limited Katanning, and representatives from all the branches.

Many of the leading business firms of Perth were personally represented, in addition to friends from Albany and as far away as Fremantle. The coffin was borne by the following managers of the branch stores of Richardson and Company Ltd., Messrs. A. J. Smith, J. V. Anthony. J. F. Bruce, W. G. White, J. Toms and Mr. H. W. Tylor of Katanning. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Lord (D. and J. Fowler). H. E. Mofflin. D. Malcolm, of Wagin, Manning of Narrogin, A. E. Piesse, T. E. Haddleton, W. Pemble, R. Cobham, G. A. Beeck, A. Prosser. Geo. McLeod (Chairman of the Katanning Road Board) and W. D. Grover.

We join with the residents of the district generally in offering our deepest sympathy to the widow and members of the bereaved family. Many beautiful wreaths and floral tributes were placed on the grave side by the following friends and sympathisers of the bereaved family:

Death of Mr. R. Richardson
Notable Katanning Resident Passes.

Albany Advertiser
6 September 1928

WIDE INTERESTS. The death yesterday morning of Mr. Robert Lawson Richardson, J.P., removed a notable resident of Katanning, and one whose name is indelibly associated with the Great Southern District. His illness was of long duration.

Mr. Richardson was born on December 30, 1862, at Dalveen, South Australia. He entered into business on his own account at Clarendon in 1897. After five years he disposed of his connection and came to Western Australia, turning his steps to Katanning after a few months on the goldfields.

In 1904 Mr. Richardson purchased an interest in the business of F. and C. Piesse, and later this was carried on under the name of Richardson and Co., the late Hon. F. H. Piesse, C.M.G., being associated in partnership with Mr. Richardson.

The Mr Richardson was an active townsman, and carried out many plans for the improvement of the district. He served on various public bodies, and held office on the sporting bodies of the district. He was an ardent bowler, and frequently played with his club on Albany greens in pennant competitions. The Great Southern inter-district annual conference also retained his interest. Mr. J. T. Mills will represent the Albany Chamber of Commerce at the funeral.
