Trading as R & J Kleeman, Ray Kleeman was a prolific builder in Katanning, building well over100 homes either in Katanning or further afield. He built his first home in 1959 for Reg Halden in Boscabel. The first home he built in Katanning was for himself and his wife Judy in Amber Street. In all he constructed a total of 73 homes in the Katanning townsite along with 21 business premises.
Theatre advertising slides
The two advertisements above were slides created by “Cyril Cornish” for Ray to use as on-screen advertising for his business at the Strathfield Drive-In Theatre in Katanning.
Ray built the ‘Concession’ building (shop) at the old Strathfield Drive-In Theatre. During the 1960’s he built several homes for the then State Housing Commission in Adam, Piesse and Pemble Streets. He also built the club rooms for the Forrest Hill Golf Club in 1962 (photos below) as well as several other commercial buildings including:
- Broomehill Bowling Club
- Kojonup Tennis Club
- Kojonup Drive-In Theatre
- Katanning Sale Yard Refreshment Room

Ray also built many homes in Katanning for local business people including Ross Courtis (funeral director), Don Boyle (shearer), John Philpott (electrician), Ken Garstone (welding engineer), Stuart Pedley (pharmacist), John Maxwell (veterinary surgeon), Donald Coventry (funeral director), Norm King (Katanning Tyre Service), Doug Filmer (machinery agent), and Ian Bolto (machinery and real estate agent).
He also constructed homes in Kojonup, Wagin, Nyabing, Ongerup, Pingrup, Albany, Bunbury, Arthur River, Tambellup, Broomehill, Bremer Bay, and Dumbleyung.
