Media

The local media has played an important role in the development of Katanning from a fledgling community to the vibrant town and community it is today. It has educated people, kept people up-to-date with the outside world particularly during two world wars and the Great Depression of the 1920’s. It has reported local news and events and announced the births, deaths, and marriages of the local populace plus much more.

Great Southern Herald

A locally printed newspaper, The Great Southern Herald printed its first edition dated 5 October, 1905… only seven years after the town of Katanning was gazetted. This weekly (although, for a while, bi-weekly) publication has been printed every week since then. Still in production today, it is Katanning’s oldest surviving business. Continue reading

Southern Districts Advocate

In 1913 the Southern Districts Advocate, owned by the Doak family, commenced production with its first publication hitting the streets on October 25. Situated in Albion Street the newspaper was published firstly every Wednesday and later, every Monday. It only ceased publication because the owner had spent over 40 years in the newspaper industry and had decided to call it a day. Its last edition was on Monday 31 August, 1936. Continue reading

RADIO STATIONS

Radio Station 6WB

The local radio station (with the call sign 6WB) was one of the early commercial radio licenses in Western Australia. Built and installed by W. A. Broadcasters Ltd, the station was used primarily as a relay station for radio station 6IX in Perth. Over the years it has had its own on-air programming but has now reverted to being a relay station for Triple M 6TZ Bunbury. In the 1980’s it added FM broadcasting (also on relay from Bunbury) giving local listeners a choice of programming. Continue reading
