PHILIP MCGUIRE
Philip McGuire was born in 1827 at Killesher, Fermanagh, Ireland, and died in Albany, Western Australia on 18 January 1905. He married Mary Ann Reardon who was born on 14 May 1834 in Tipperary, Ireland and died on 6 August 1917
After he had completed his education, he became a labourer. He later enlisted in the Royal Marines 57th Regiment as a Private on the 30 October 1847 at Manchester when aged 21 years. He was invalided out on the 17 May 1848 according to his military record from Royal Marines description books.
He arrived at Fremantle on 28 June 1851 from the United Kingdom by the sailing ship “Pyrenees” as an Enrolled Pensioner Guard. On 1 January 1852, when he was on duty at King George’s Sound, Albany, he applied for a grant land. On 31 December 1853, he was granted three acres freehold subject to residence and improvement conditions at Albany next to Strawberry Hill Farm and called it Fermanagh presumably after his place of birth.
Philip McGuire followed a variety of occupations; a prisoner’s guard along the Perth to Albany Road at the Arthur, Wackenup Pool and Peringellup.
On 11th February 1855 Obediah Stevens was being escorted to from Kojonup to Beaufort Hills by Const. Philip McGuire and mailman Septimus Robert Toovey. McGuire was a mounted policeman stationed at Beaufort Hills, 23 miles north of Kojonup and Toohey was the mail carrier between Kojonup and Perth. At Beaufort Hills Const. Thomas Knibbs replaced McGuire as prisoner escort proceeding on toward Perth.
The next day Knibbs was shot at close range in the chest with his own gun by Stevens near Williams pool. Knibbs was the first police officer killed on duty in Western Australia. The day after Constable Knibb’s murder, Const. Phillip McGuire and mailman Robert Toovey set off again for Perth with Stevens and the trooper’s body. According to police records, “the smell from the body became offensive and they buried it at Bannister.” There is a plaque commemorating Knibb’s murder at Bannister. McGuire and Toovey continued on to Perth with the prisoner.
Eticup Police Station was established in January 1865 and remained operational until December 1873.
In 1869 Philip took up land at Eticup and named his property “Moorellup”, which was incorporated in the Fermoy Farm at East Broomehill in 1905. The original house is still preserved there. The farm is owned by the descendants of his son Thomas McGuire.
He was possibly illiterate as he used a cross to make his mark on his Marriage Certificate. His occupation was listed as labourer and his father was listed as Patrick McGuire. On his death certificate his mother was listed as Mary Hart.

THOMAS MCGUIRE
Thomas McGuire, a son of Philip McGuire was born on the 28th July 1864 in Albany, Western Australia and married Brigid Mary Roche on 3 September 1900 in Perth, Western Australia. He died on 26th November 1929 and is buried at the Broomehill Cemetery, Western Australia:
DEATH OF MR. TOM McGUIRE.
WIDESPREAD REGRETS
Great Southern Herald
30 November 1929
On Tuesday afternoon, when it became known that Mr. Tom McGuire, of “Fermoy,” Broomehill, had succumbed to the illness from which he had suffered for a lengthy period, profound regret was felt by all who had known this old and respected pioneer of the Broomehill district. The burial, which took place at the Broomehill Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon was attended by representatives from the whole district, the numbers present being a tribute to the esteem and affection in which he was held by all sections.
The death of Mr. McGuire snaps another link with the pioneering days of these districts. His father, P. C. Philip McGuire, came to Albany from Ireland in the early fifties, Tom, who was born at Albany, being the second son of a family of eleven children. About 1870, his parents migrated to Morellup, part of the present Fermoy estate, and he was brought up on the farm.
In early manhood he followed sandalwooding and shepherding, his skill amongst stock obtaining for him the position of manager of the Pallinup Estate, which he held until, in 1903, he resigned to take over Fermoy. Since that time, he made it his ambition to bring his property to a high state of perfection, the original holding being added to until it comprised 5,000 acres of well-developed country, great attention being given to the improvement of his flock of merinos.
From the time be reached manhood until his end. be evinced great interest in public affairs and was connected with all movements for the betterment of the district. For over 30 years continuously he was a member of the Broomehill Road Board, occupying the position of Chairman for the past 13 years.
An original promoter of the Broomehill Co-operative Company, he had been director from its inception, and also was a director of the Katanning Flour Mills Ltd. He had been an active member of the Primary Producers Association since its inauguration, had held office with the Broomehill branch for many years, and was district representative on the Executive at the time of his death.
He was a great lover of all sport, and his death has deprived the various sporting bodies of the district of a very practical friend. His appointment as Justice of the Peace was made in 1915. He married, in 1900, Miss Bridget Roche, of Melbourne, who was the schoolteacher at Broomehill, their union being blessed with fifteen children, of whom fourteen and the widow still survive.
The funeral was conducted in the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, Father Reidy performing the burial ceremony. The pallbearers were the members of the Broomehill Road Board, Messrs. J. F. Hillman, G. L. Hardie, B. Richardson, N. Anderson, G. F. Meyer, R. B. Marshall, E. Genoni, W. D. Grover, J. G. Stephens, and Mr. J. R. Norrish, an ex-member of the board.

20 November, 1953
Mr Thomas Francis McGuire, of Broomehill, was killed instantly in a traffic accident on the Broomehill Road on Friday, November 6.
Born at Albany on 13 October, 1914 , the deceased was the third son of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas McGuire, who were among the earliest settlers in the Broomehill district. Known as Frank to his extremely wide circle of friends, the late Mr McGuire spent his childhood days on the family property, “Fermoy”, Broomehill. His early education was received at the Peringillup school, later he attended the Christian Brothers College. On the completion of his schooling, he returned to “Fermoy” to take his part in the working of the property.
Enlisting in the army in 1941, Frank McGuire first saw service in the Middle East and later in New Guinea. He was then attached to the “Kenimbla” for duty at Darwin and in the Philippines. On his discharge in February, 1946, he returned to Broomehill and entered into a partnership with his brother Terry on “Fermoy”.
The late Mr McGuire took a keen interest in all sporting activities and was a member of the Broomehill Rifle Club, Football Club, Golf Club and Cricket Club. He was a member of the R.A.O.B, Lodge, the Broomehill R.S.L. Sub-branch and was also an active member of the Farmer’s Union.
The extent of his popularity, and the respect with which he was held throughout the Broomehill and neighbouring districts, was illustrated by the very large attendance at the funeral on Monday, November 9, when his remains were laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion of the Broomehill cemetery. The service was conducted by Fathers Costello, Brennan and Crocetti, and funeral arrangements were in the hands of C. E. Courtis and Sons.
