F & C Piesse’s Katanning Roller Flour Mill 1st May 1891
Refurbished and repurposed as a boutique hotel and Dome cafe and reopened on 1st May 2018

Today’s Katanning is vastly different from the town of the late 1800’s although it still has many of its fine old buildings and remains a very vibrant community. It has a very cosmopolitan population, one of the most diverse in Australia.

It remains the regional centre for the Great Southern and continues to rely on agriculture for its economic stability. However, it is working on growing tourism, not just in Katanning, but throughout the region. A new boutique hotel and Dome Cafe situated in the refurbished and repurposed old flour mill has seen an added vibrancy to the town.

The Shire of Katanning was successful in receiving funding for a comprehensive beautification of the town and that is now beginning to take shape. The old Piesse dam area has been revitalised including a man-made lake, parklands and an ampitheatre. The all ages adventure playground at the town’s main entrance has been rebuilt and is fully grassed throughout. The Lion’s Park has also been refurbished and fully grassed including the provision of a large skate park.

As in every other community the retail scene has had a major hit although the business community remains strong. As in the old days, people and business continue to invest in the infrastructure of the town including major additions to the hospital and high school and the construction of the largest undercover sheep selling facility in the southern hemisphere.
