The Katanning Athletics Club was formed in 1903 following the amalgamation of the Katanning Athletics Sport Committee and a rival group set up to hold an event on New Years Day. Following a public meeting on Monday 23 February 1903 at the Katanning Public Hall it was agreed that both parties amalgamate to become the Katanning Athletic Club. It held its first event at the Katanning Recreation Ground on Easter Monday, 13 April 1903.

KATANNING ATHLETIC CLUB
INAUGURAL SPORTS MEETING.

Great Southern Herald
18 April 1903 – P3

Easter Monday, which dawned very wet, witnessed the holding of the inaugural sports meeting in connection with the Katanning Athletic Club on the local Recreation Reserve. Had it not been for the rain, which fell in intermittent showers up till breakfast time, there would doubtless have been a very large attendance. The adverse and threatening nature of the weather, prevented many residents out from Katanning from coming in to enjoy the holiday.

As it was 350 people paid for admission. A loss, rather than a profit, will result to the club over the meeting which, however, from a sporting point of view, was very successful. The contests were keen and exciting in all the foot running events and in the longer distance cycling events. The handicappers, Messrs J. McDonald and C. Temby, are to be  complimented on the general results of their allocation of the starts. Mr McDonald is further deserving of special commendation for his excellent work with the starting “pistol,” a double-barrelled, breech-loading Greener gun, with which he effected machine-like starts throughout the day. Be it known by these present that not a solitary instance of a false start was recorded during the day – a record of which Mr “Mac” may well be proud.

The club’s patron, the Hon. F. H. Piesse, M.L.A., was present during the afternoon, but the President was conspicuous only by his absence, as were also the majority of the vice presidents, only two of the latter being present. Messrs W. J. Harris and A. Hoglin acted as judges; Mr E. H. Spencer, as timekeeper, “clocked” the many races with the precision and accuracy of a Jolly (The W.A. Turf Club’s timekeeper, of Stewart Dawson and Co), Mr L. Josephs evidenced that he thoroughly understood the duties of a sports meeting steward, working energetically all day, and Mr J. Maley Chipper hart apparently, for the nonce, discovered the secret of perpetual motion, so busy was he kept from sunrise till after sunset on the eventful day.

As to the committee – chaired by Mr L. Roth, who worked with a will to ensure the success of the meeting. Messrs J. M. Elliott, E. B. Johnston and H. Starr were the only absentees from their posts of duty for the reason that they were out of Katanning. The seven others did work. The detailed results are unavoidably held over.

Following are the details of the event at the inaugural sports meeting in connection with the Katanning Athletic Club.

Two objections were lodged against Cusack; the first by Carter in the ground that he was not a maiden rider, and the second, by Tree, that he had not furnished his correct performances to the handicapper. Cusack signed a declaration that he had not competed in any race before, and that he had supplied all the required information and then left for Perth next day.

The committee have since heard from Perth that Cusack rode at the last St. Patrick’s Day Sports in Perth, and Cusack has been accordingly notified of the committee’s intention to disqualify him. L. W. Bushby was also protested against on the ground of having furnished incomplete performances to the handicapper. Bushby made an appointment to meet the club officials and sign a declaration that he had acted in a bona fide manner, but sneaked away to Perth and failed to keep the appointment. The committee accordingly promptly met and disqualified Bushby’s claim to any prize money.

KATANNING ATHLETIC CLUB.
SECOND ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING.
BEAUTIFUL WEATHER AND A BIG ATTENDANCE

Great Southern Herald
Saturday 9 April 1904 – P3

Monday morning broke fine. The sun shone; the clouds were clear, and all fears that had been expressed previously with regard to the state of the weather were at once dispelled. Everybody prepared for an enjoyable day and had a kind of holiday look about them as they went out of doors. It was evident that the sports meeting would be successful, and people seemed anxious for 11 o’clock to arrive when operations would start on the Recreation Reserve. Already a large crowd had gathered in the vicinity of the arena, and it increased as the day wore on. In the afternoon the attendance was estimated at over 500.

The Reserve was specially done up for the occasion, and the fence which the committee had erected round portion of the track was much appreciated by both the officials and public. It was the means of keeping the crowd off the ground. Thus, the officials were unhindered in their work, and everybody could obtain a good view of the racing.

The Board of Management has now received a promise of £150 from the Government, and, if part of that money is spent on fencing, the improvement so effected to the ground will be considerable.

Speaking generally the racing last Monday was exceptionally good. The riding of some of the Perth men did not give satisfaction, but, when cyclists who make their living at the game are induced to attend a meeting in the country, it is only to be expected that they agree beforehand to make it worth their while.

The times in both the cycling and pedestrian events were better than those of last year, and some of the finishes were very exciting. The arrangements were splendidly carried but by the hon. secretary, Mr J. M. Chipper, who deserves much credit for his energy and ability. Mr J. McDonald again proved himself a capable starter, and the other officials were Messrs Couchman, McIndoe and Temby, judges; Roth, referee; Wilson and Johnston, stewards; Barber, McDonald, Scott, Mouritz and Tremearne, umpires; Barber, colour steward; and Elliott; lap scorer. It is anticipated that the Athletic Club will have a credit balance of about £20 as a result of the meeting.

Following are the details of the racing:

Final. W. Travers – 1, A. Jewell – 2, A. Davies – 3.
Other starters: Craig, Harvey, Tree, Connop and Richter
Harvey made the pace from the start and, when half the distance had been covered, he was still in this lead with Richter lying second and Travers third. Travers then crept into second position, and the ruck began to move faster. Three-quarters of the distance had then been traversed and Harvey, who had done all the pacing, was some lengths ahead of the second man. At the bell Jewell shot into a good position and the places then were Harvey, Jewell, and Travers. A t the home turn Travers sprinted splendidly and romped home a winner two lengths in front of Jewell, whilst only a wheel separated second and third men, Harvey was fourth and Tree fifth. Time, 4 49 4.5th.

HALF-MILE BICYCLE RACE.
First: A. Darby, 100 yds, 1; G. Harvey, 65 yds, 2; C. Stewart, 55 yds, 3. Also started: A; Shanahan, 65 yds, and O. Keally, 80 yds. Won with ease Time, 1.8.
Second Heat: A. Davies, 25 yds, 1; A. Jewell, 25 yds, 2; C. Connop, 45 yds 3. Other starters were W. Travers, 50 yds, T. Braun, 60 yds, and A. Wright, 85 yds. In this event Braun’s machine skidded and brought its rider down, also Travers, who could not get out of the way in time. Wright managed save himself by going off the track. Won by a length. Time, 1.13.
Third Heat: Tree, 70 yds, 1; A. Craig, 35 yds, 2; ft. E. Quartermaine, 65 yds, .3. Won with ease. Time, l 11 l-5th.
Final: Connop 1, Craig 2, Darby 3.

440 YARDS HANDICAP.
J. Penny, 42yds, 1; J. Smith, 35 yds, 2; W. Hayward, 25 yds, 3.
A good race. When within 2 yards of the winning post Smith challenged Penny who, until then, had been leading by several yards and the latter responded, finishing three yards ahead of Smith. Hayward was third and McNamara fourth. Time, 54 2-5th.

FIVE MILE SCRATCH RACE.
Craig 1, Davies 2, A. Jewell 3.
Other starters: Travers, Braun, Tree, Connop and Harvey. The men were paced by Bailey on a motorcycle. For the first 10 laps the positions were Jewell, Davies, Craig, Connop and Braun respectively. Tree and Harvey had given it best long before this. Jewell who had clung close to Bailey’s wheel began to leave the field behind him. At the fifteenth lap Braun and Connop threw up the sponge, and Jewell was a distance of 150 yards in the lead. Bailey, however, was called off at the bell, and he fell behind and brought up the ruck, which caught him at the home turn. Craig went to the fore and had no difficulty in finishing a couple of lengths in the lead of Davies, Jewell being half a length behind the second man, and Travers a good fourth.
