Hotels
The first hotel in Katanning, the Katanning Hotel, was built in 1889 by the Piesse brothers. The hotel burned to the ground and was rebuilt by George McLeod.
The Railway Hotel was the next built but that too burned down. It was rebuilt as the Royal Exchange Hotel.
Katanning’s third and final hotel was the Federal Hotel in Clive Street.
Katanning also had a coffee palace, one of only a few built in country Western Australia. A coffee palace was similar to a hotel but didn’t sell alcohol.
KATANNING HOTEL
The first Hotel to be built in Katanning was the Katanning Hotel. The original single-storey wood and iron hotel was erected in 1889 by the Piesse Bros. On Saturday, 23rd January, 1897, when John Cook was the Licensee, the building was razed by fire which blazed fiercely and was soon destroyed. It is no longer a hotel but part of the Katanning Civic Centre

ROYAL EXCHANGE HOTEL
The former Railway Hotel, Katanning’s second hotel, opened its doors in 1891 with Richard Bell its first publican in 1897. The Railway Hotel was a wood and iron structure located directly across from the railway station. The name was changed to the Royal Exchange Hotel when owned by John C Cook. On 3 April 1894, the hotel was badly damaged by fire due to arson.

FEDERAL HOTEL
The Federal Hotel was constructed in 1904 as a two-storey hotel, the third storey was added in 1913 by James Fairclough. It was the third hotel for Katanning, opening its doors in September, after some controversy over whether Katanning needed another hotel. The original proprietor of the hotel was Alfred Pearmine and the manager was James Conroy.
