CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS BALL

Great Southern Herald
18 July, 1923 (p2)

There could be no doubt about the success of the Fancy Dress Ball held by the local School in the Town Hall on Thursday evening last (12 July 1923) and the accommodation both for dancers and spectators was taxed to the utmost.

The Hall was very prettily decorated with green and gold streamers, the work of Miss Bourke and the senior girls. Added to this artistic setting the varied colouring of the costumes, the constant movement, and just a ripple of fun, and the whole spectacle was pleasing in the extreme and a cause of gratification to both parents and school.

The items of the programme, which consisted of waltz’s, three-steps, garden waltz’s, lancers, Sir Roger de Coventrey’s and barn dance were carried through in quick succession.

The fourth item consisted of the Grand March in which upward of 140 children paraded in costume in the limited floor space available. Despite this, they managed the various evolutions and finally took their places for the lancers. The maze, in two sections, the seniors led by Mavis Baker, and the juniors by Doris Richmond, was also executed by the children.

At 10 o’clock promptly the children were arranged in lines in the hall and supper served. Here the result of the labours of the ladies’ committee under Mrs. Keeley, was quickly consumed with gusto by the children, while the adults were served with supper afterwards, and at 10.30 the dance was continued by the adults till midnight.

The floor arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr. J. Woods, who journeyed from Broomehill to take charge of the function. The thanks of the school is also due to Mrs. Keeley’s committee, consisting of the following ladies: – Mesdames. Keeley, Dilworth, Bott, Keay, Marris, Swinhoe and Walters; and to Messrs Berger and Reid, for help at the door. The School also wishes to thank all parents for their kind donations towards the supper.
