The death occurred in the Kojonup District Hospital on September 5 of Mrs Alice Agnes Buirchell, at the age of 76, after a long illness. Mrs Buirchell, who was the youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs T. Rodgers, was born at Eticup in 1876.
Following the death of her father, when she was about 12 years of age, she worked for a while at “Mean Mahn,” later coming to Kojonup, and marrying Mr Tom Buirchell in 1894. During the early days of her married life, she accompanied her husband while he moved about following his occupation as shepherd. Later they lived at Yorbup and Mallet Hills, when Mr Buirchell was farming on his own account in those areas.
Mrs Buirchell took up permanent residence in Kojonup in 1918 and, since 1920 when Mr Buirchell sold his last farming property, she and her husband have been the centre of a wide circle of friends. Although Mrs Buirchell took no active interest in public matters, she was always a very popular figure.
Mrs Buirchell had not enjoyed good health for a number of years and in June suffered a stroke, being an inmate of the Kojonup District Hospital from then until her death. Her passing is mourned by her husband, daughters Mrs R. Balloch, Mrs A. M. Balloch (Perth), Mrs W. Masters, Mrs N. Muir, Mrs J. Goodlad (Bunbury) and sons W. (Bonnie) and H. (Mick) Buirchell, and friends.
The funeral took place in the Anglican portion of the Kojonup Cemetery on September 6, the last rites (being performed by the Rev. E. C. King. The duties of pall-hearers were carried out by Messrs A. W. Partridge, A. Walker, W. J. Norrish, P. Luz, J. Tunney and W. H. Jones.
