Jones Robert Henry. Jones Robert Henry. Jones Robert Henry.
From the Great Southern Herald
8 September 1937
The announcement that Mr. R. H. Jones, of Broomehill, had died at the Katanning Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning came as a great shock to his many friends in these districts, numbers of whom known him intimately for a great number of years. Mr Jones, who was 70 years of age, had contracted a chill which turned to influenza, his condition necessitating removal to hospital at the beginning of last week, and the end came suddenly and unexpectedly.
Mr. Jones was born at Clifden, Connemarra, Ireland, in 1867, the son of a Methodist clergyman, and came to this State In 1894 after having been for some years in Sydney and Melbourne. He settled at Broomehill, selecting two fair-sized properties in the vicinity of the townsite, these now being owned by his two elder sons. In his early years of his association with the district he was for a period secretary to the Broomehill Road Board.
He also established a general store, which he later sold to Messrs. Drew, Robinson and Co. Ltd, of Albany, subsequently opening a fancy goods and newsagency business which he retained, more as a hobby, until the time of his death. In 1901 be married Agnes Mary, fourth daughter of Mrs. Norrish, of Armadale, and the late Thomas Norrish, of Sunnyside, Broomehill, there being seven children of the union. Of a quiet and unassuming nature, Mr. Jones bore his share in the development and progress of the district without ostentation and was always ready to give assistance where necessary.
The Jones business was sold to Drew, Robinson and Co. Ltd and later to Clune Bros.
He was keenly interested in sport, particularly horse racing, and for some years prior to his death – had trotters racing on lease in Perth. He leaves a widow, three sons and four daughters and 12 grandchildren to mourn their loss.
The funeral took place at the Broomehill cemetery on Sunday afternoon, the cortege comprising just on 100 cars forming at the Broomehill Presbyterian Church prior to proceeding to the burial ground. The service at the graveside was conducted by Mr. T. E. Diggins, the resident Presbyterian minister, funeral arrangements being in the hands of Mr. J. Squiers, Katanning.
