Following the closure of so many of our one-teacher schools in Katanning and surrounding districts, school buses started to appear. Many of those buses transported children to and from Katanning schools but many also travelled to places like Nyabing, Woodanilling and Broomehill.
With poor roads, weather played an important part on whether children got to school, particularly in winter. Boggy roads, rising creeks, and flooded bridges were all part of the school bus run. Seats were hard and there was no air-conditioning, so the trip home was generally very hot and uncomfortable during the summer months.
However, many life-long friendships, even romances, were formed on the school bus as children of all ages mixed together to attend school. Some walked the long driveway to the road while others rode their bikes or had the use of an old “bomb” to drive to the gate to await the school bus.
Often, there was a rudimentary shelter to protect children from the elements as they waited for the bus. What sort of shelter did you have at your gate? These days, most children are driven to the gate, and are picked up on arrival, by their parents.
School buses still provide an important part in the education of country kids living outside of towns, particularly on farms.
