Great Southern Herald
2 November, 1951
Favoured with exceptional support from visitors from throughout most lower Great Southern districts, and with splendid co-operation from exhibitors, the Great Southern Jubilee show conducted at Katanning on Friday and Saturday last proved to be an outstanding success in every way.
In opening the show, Mr C. D. Nalder, M.L.A. extended his congratulations to the Society for the manner in which the official Jubilee event for the Great Southern had been conducted. Other important official visitors, including Mr D. T. Luck, President of the Royal Agricultural Society, Mr N. W. Higham, a vice-president of the Royal, and that Society’s secretary, and Mr J. B. Marshall, were all most complimentary on the efficient organisation displayed in the management of the two-day event and congratulated the Society on the co-operation it received from exhibitors.
The Society estimated that over the two days, more than 7,000 people were on the grounds. On the main day it was estimated that at the peak of the afternoon, over 5,000 people were moving about the various displays and side shows, or watching the ring event programme. In reaching its figures, the Society considered approximately 500 members, their wives and children attended the show on Friday, and that members’ attendances were doubled on Saturday. It was estimated that with members’ cars, nearly 400 motor vehicles were parked inside the grounds on Saturday.

KATANNING JUBILEE SHOW
Great Southern Herald
2 November, 1951
The Great Southern Jubilee Show, conducted in conjunction with the Katanning Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s 61st annual show on October 26 and 27, established all-time records in the number of attendances and the quantity of exhibits.
Despite the blistering heat on the first day, the number of patrons was slightly in excess of the 1950 first day, while under the improved weather conditions of Saturday an immense crowd of over 5,000 packed the area. The Societies decision to completely alter the internal layout of the grounds proved fortunate and it was considered the hugs attendance could not have been accommodated on the grounds had it not been for the spacious grouping given the jubilee display, side shows and industrial exhibits.
The timely action in increasing the parking space was also more than justified when over 800 cars were comfortably parked on Saturday. The internal handling of traffic resulted in all vehicles entering and leaving the grounds without undue difficulty or delay.
Side shows were not as numerous as had been expected but, on the other hand, the largest display of industrial exhibits to be seen on the Katanning grounds was staged by local agents and dealers. This year the emphasis was on agricultural machinery and the stands of all exhibitors were surrounded by interested spectators, the crush becoming particularly heavy on the second day.
Taken overall, the number of exhibits was far greater this year, the heaviest increases taking place in the women’s sections. The cookery section received the finest support yet and competition was keen throughout. The entry of Mrs Wright of Gnowangerup in the preserved foodstuffs class containing no less than 98 varieties of bottled foods attracted particular attention. A considerable increase was also shown in the needlework section and both the general quality of exhibits and the keener competition was noticeable in the majority of classes.
Although some considered the flower section to have strengthened in some classes, and fallen off in others because of recent weather conditions giving an overall effect of being comparable to last year, the flower judge was most complimentary, stating he had not seen a better display this year.
The decorated pillars particularly caught his eye and he considered them to be a credit to the Society. The standard of decorative work throughout was considered to be really good. Speaking of entries in the petunia classes, the judge stated he had never seen better.
In the agricultural, sections, a slight falling off was noticed, although there were over 90 entries in the sheep section, and 105 exhibits competed in every class in the wool section. Satisfactory support was received in the agricultural produce section and cattle sections. The cattle judge expressed the opinion the champion cow exhibited by Mr T. Applin would have been a prize winner at the Royal or at any leading dairy show in the State.
Show patrons were again presented with a most attractive ring event programme which attracted 20 and more entries in some events. Judge, Mr C. Murray stated afterwards that in his fifty years experience of show judging, both in New Zealand and Australia, he had never seen a better organised programme. Mr Murray said he was most impressed with the standard of horses competing, it being far higher than he had expected.
Referring to the sheep dog trials he considered them to be the best he had seen in W.A.
OFFICIAL OPENING
Official
visitors to the show over the two days included Mr R. H. Miller, State director
of the Tourist Bureau and chairman of |the State Jubilee Celebrations
committee, officials of the Royal Agricultural Society and Jubilee display
judges, Senator Edmund Piesse, Mr C. D. Nalder, M.L.A, the Hons. H. L. Roche,
A. L. Loton, J. M. Thomson, M’s.L C. and the Hon A. Thomson.
Calling on the district Member to open the show, the president Mr H. R. Conning stated how pleased he was to welcome the large crowd of show visitors. He expressed his thanks to the stewards for the considerable amount of work they had done in handling the Jubilee show and also thanked exhibitors for the excellent support they had given. Prior to announcing the names of the display winners, Mr Conning expressed his thanks to the ladies for the part they had played and to the Society secretary and committeemen for their assistance both during year and on the day of the show.
In officially opening the show, Mr. C. D. Nalder, M.L.A., stated that although there appeared to be apathy on the part of some towards agricultural shows, it was felt they played an important part in the development of the district. Everybody now recognised the need for increased food production and a big part in that required development and improvement throughout the State would be affected through agricultural societies.
Mr Nalder congratulated the Society on being selected to conduct the Jubilee show for the Great Southern, and on the successful manner in which they had so done.
Senator Edmund Piesse moved a vote of thanks to Mr Nalder and stated he regretted that when the Commonwealth Government had allocated money to the various organisations in order they might bring the importance of the Jubilee before the people, that a greater amount had not come to agricultural societies. Because of the excellent job they were doing a greater allocation would have been justified.
