In the early days of Katanning, it would have been the men working hard to build a house (albeit, very rough to our standards of today), to clear the land, and to start growing crops and stock. Their womenfolk would probably have worked just as hard, both alongside their men, and in creating a home in that house, rearing their children, and looking after her family in conditions that we will never understand.
Over the years there have been many Katanning men and women who have achieved much in public life and within the community. Katanning has continued to grow and thrive into a major centre within the Great Southern region of Western Australia thanks to their efforts.
Many Katanning men have made an important mark in the history of our town, our state and, indeed, our country. Young men signed up and went off to war to defend the freedom of not only their own country but that of others around the world. They continue to do so today.
Elijah Quartermaine
was our first settler after droving sheep to and from York and Beverley for twenty years.
Frederick Henry Piesse
Arguably, the most prominent was Frederick Piesse. He is recognised as being the founder of Katanning, and it is through his amazing business acumen and foresight that the town was able to grow into the thriving community it is today. Frederick Piesse was the first chairman of the Katanning Road Board (later Shire of Katanning) and represented the seat of Katanning in the Forrest State Government. He also acted as Premier and Opposition Leader for a short period, and was Western Australia’s representative on the Federation Council.
Dr. F.M. House
was Katanning’s first doctor. He also set up the Katanning Boy’s Grammar School, and the building was later to become Coleraine Hospital.
Robert Lawson Richardson
played a major role in the development of our retail industry when he took control of F.H. Piesse’s store in Austral Terrace. Under his leadership, the building was extended to abut the Katanning Hotel and was considered one of the finest out of the Perth metropolitan area.
Alexander Thomson
was a builder, building many of Katanning’s fine Federation homes, and he also represented Katanning in state parliament.
George McLeod
was the son of a convict, built the Katanning Hotel after the first hotel, built by Frederick Piesse, burnt to the ground. He was the longest serving member of the Katanning Road Board.

Help
Researching our local Katanning and surrounding districts history has developed into a big task. The Central Great Southern region has such a rich history, dating back to the mid 1880s.
This website has been set up to preserve that history for future generations and for people to find that information and photographs in one place for their own research – particularly for family trees. I have many research sources available to me, however that is not always enough.
Often, information comes from local folk – just like you.
If you have any information, photographs or files about the men of Katanning
that you would be prepared to share I would love to hear from you.
Not just the men of our long ago past, but right through to today!
Help me to grow this page as there are many more men worthy of recognition on this page.
Not just the men of our past – but right through to today! Or tell us your own story!
If you think someone deserves their story on this page please email me their story and,if possible, a photo to:
